Q: What services do you offer at Sprinkles On Top Studios?
A: I offer pre-made book covers, custom book covers, book trailers, promotional banners, picture teasers, character cards, author branding, and I’m looking into expanding into offering custom fonts.
Q: What got you started in cover design?
A: Well, I don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner! I am an avid book lover, and I could spend an entire day browsing a book store. There’s something so magical about buying a book and breaking the spine in. Anywhoozle, my boyfriend, Jake Bonsignore, is an indie author (Empyreal Illusions, Awakening the Fire, and The Lioness), and that’s how I learned about the whole indie culture. I started seeing book covers and designers, and I thought, “Hmm…I could do that.” I started playing around with a Photoshop trial which lead to the purchase of stock photography subscription which lead to the purchase of a Mac…and here we are! I’ve always been creative, and it’s combining some of my favorite things into one little package. It’s fantastic!
Q: How did you come up with the name for SOTS?
A: Actually, I wanted it to be Sprinkles Studios, but that was already taken. Luckily, I have a brilliant other half who suggested the adding of the additional wording. Also, I’ve always been obsessed with sprinkles; I just love them. When I was little, my mom would put sprinkles in the pancake batter forSaturday Morning Pancakes. I wouldn’t even eat “regular” pancakes because they had to have sprinkles. My nickname is Sarah Sprinklepants.
Q: What inspires you?
A: It could be anything really. I love music, and you’ll usually find me rocking headphones. So obviously, I do get a lot of inspiration from music. I have very diverse taste in music that ranges from the “You listen to that?” and the “YOU DO NOT LISTEN TO THAT.” And yes, yes, I do. I’m shameless.
Q: What is your favorite cover that you’ve done?
A: I have a few. My two favorites are probably “Snipe Hunt” by Wade Le Fevre and “echo” by Jamie Loeak. I was trying out new techniques on these covers and new ideas which I think turned out great.
Q: Rumor has it that you are also an author…can you tell me about that?
A: Yes, I am also an aspiring author. I have many works in progress, and I have a tendency to get a great idea only to forget to write it down. Luckily for me, I’m writing a humorous memoir which is a compilation of events in my life. It is entitled, “Confessions….” I haven’t released what the confessions are all about yet. I’m hoping to have it finished and ready for release Spring/Summer 2014 in time for Indie BookFest 2014.
Q: Speaking of Indie BookFest, you attended this year. What was your first event like?
A: It was a last minute decision to share the table at the event. I hadn’t planned on attending any events until the Fall in order to give myself time to plan. Well, I didn’t have that luxury, and it worked out great! I had a quickly put together Staples portfolio and store bought cupcakes. I met some wonderful people, and I was able to network. I cannot wait to see everyone next year!
Q: Do you have any upcoming events for 2013 and 2014?
A: I do! I have Florida’s Writer Association Conference in October as well as World Fantasy Convention next November. As of right now, those are the only ones I already have a purchases table at. I’m sure I will be adding more, and I hope so as I love meeting my clients!
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: When I have spare time, I like to relax and watch true crime shows on Netflix. I also enjoy painting. Depending on my mood, I sometimes enjoy working out.
Q: Do you have any advice for authors just starting out?
A: Chill. Seriously, just chill. There are going to be people who love you and people who hate you. That’s like anything in life. Don’t let it get you down. If you’re writing something that isn’t the norm, that is completely okay. Be you. Be true to you.
