Can taking a chance on love conquer all?
~ My Review ~
Lily loses her parents and sister in a horrible car crash. She blames herself even though it wasn't her fault and can't understand why she was the only one to survive. Unable to cope with the pain and guilt, she runs away with only the clothes on her back and a few meager possessions, avoiding saying a final goodbye to her loved ones at their funeral. She takes up residency in Florida where she begins her career as a romance novelist hoping to one day venture into other genres. Enter alpha male Kyle. He's immediately intrigued by her and works his way into her life rather quickly.
For me, the way everything transpires between Lily and Kyle is a little unrealistic. They just met and Kyle is already "claiming" her and telling her she's not going to be alone anymore. It's just not believable. For someone who is so afraid to get close to anybody for fear of opening up and getting hurt (or losing them), Lily doesn't hesitate to trust Kyle, a complete stranger, and dive into a serious relationship. It's hard to believe that this story covers a 2 week time span, but then again after you get over the initial shock of their intense meeting the rest of the story stretches on so that it does feel like they've known each other longer.
I wasn't thrilled with the character development. They were somewhat one dimensional and I didn't feel an emotional connection to them nor was I entirely invested in the story. Lily was a bit too whiny and weak for my liking. Granted she was going through a tough time but occasionally she just came off as incredibly selfish. I found the writing style to be repetitive at times when describing people and situations and the conversations were awkward at times. I was seriously confused by the ending. It really came out of no where and just didn't fit in with the final scene, making it a questionable cliffhanger.
For a debut novel, Alicia Rae definitely shows a lot of promise in her ability as a writer but she needs to refine her skills a little bit which will come with practice and time. I would read another one of her novels b/c I see lots of potential in her.
