Review - Addicted by Zane

Before there was E.L. James’s 50 Shades of Grey, there was Zane’s Addicted. Once described as “the hottest paperback in the country” by the New York Times and now a major motion picture distributed by Lionsgate, this wildly popular novel by the Queen of Erotica follows one woman’s life as it spirals out of control when her three extramarital affairs lead her down a dark and twisted path.

For successful African-American businesswoman Zoe Reynard, finding the pleasure she wants, the way she wants it, is not worth the risk of losing everything she has: marriage to the man she has loved since childhood, a thriving company, and three wonderful children. But Zoe feels helpless in the grip of an overpowering addiction…to sex.

Finding a compassionate woman therapist to help her, Zoe finally summons the courage to tell her torrid story, a tale of guilt and desire as shocking as it is compelling. From the sensitive artist with whom she spends stolen hours on rumpled sheets to the rough and violent man who draws her toward destruction, Zoe is a woman desperately searching for fulfillment—and something darker, deeper, and perhaps deadly. As her life spins out of control and her sexual escapades carry her toward a dangerous choice, Zoe is racing against time to uncover the source of her “fatal attraction”—as chilling secrets tumble forth from the recesses of a woman's mind, and perilous temptations lead toward a climax that can threaten her sanity, her marriage…and her life.

O M G …so I initially heard about Addicted from a fellow blogger but I didn’t know too much about it and really didn’t give it much thought. And then I happened to stumble upon the trailer for the movie (releasing on October 10th ) and I was sold! My interest was immediately piqued and I was determined to read the book before seeing the movie.

What I loved most about this book is the way it’s written. I greatly appreciate “real talk”, meaning characters who talk like your average person, slang and all. It makes them easier to relate to and the story just flows better because it’s almost like you’re talking to or listening to a friend. That’s one of the reasons I was able to finish it in a day, well that and because I literally couldn’t put it down.

While I typically don’t go for books that involve cheating or love triangles I couldn’t resist this one. We always hear about male characters or even male celebs in real life being sex addicts, but we never really hear the story from a female addict’s perspective. Some people might say, “I don’t care what she has to say about it, cheating is cheating”, but it’s really not, at least not in this situation. Zane does an amazing job of portraying Zoe and Jason’s relationship from the moment they first met until their current predicament. She basically lays out the foundation showing their ups and downs and mixed emotions, so we know without a shadow of a doubt that Zoe is in fact madly in love with her husband. She’s just sick and needs help.

I can’t help but place some of the blame on Jason. Zoe reaches out to him every chance she gets, trying to initiate both sex and conversation, and he turns her down every single time. On the rare occasions they actually do have sex it’s bland and boring and Zoe is always left unsatisfied. It’s not that she doesn’t desire her husband or that she finds him unattractive. It’s the complete opposite, she comments on his good looks and amazing personality all the time. The problem is that he’s just not worried about her needs and wants, only his own, and that’s not enough for her. Coupled with the addiction, it just leads to numerous bad decisions on Zoe’s part.

The amount of drama, romance, suspense and over all craziness packed into this novel was insane, in a good way. I was literally on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book, hence the reason I finished it in a day. All of the plot twists really did catch me by surprise, especially the ending. Zane does an amazing job of weaving an intricately detailed story of lies and deception and spinning it into an absolutely gripping unputdownable (totally making that a word) novel. My coworkers and I did a group reading of this book, even though we all finished at different times, and we all agreed that it was sexy, shocking and seriously intense. And we’ll all be seeing the movie together :)

As much as I loved this book I do have a couple of issues. My main issue being a little something I like to call inappropriate use of exclamation points. In my opinion exclamation points are used to express excitement or anger and should always be used in the proper context. That wasn’t the case here; exclamation points were used at the most awkward times when neither of the aforementioned emotions was present. Now this might not bother you in the slightest but for me it interfered with my reading because in my mind I’m picturing the characters responding a certain way and the exclamation points just don’t coincide with what’s being said or the tone of the scene.

My other issue is that certain plot points seemed unbelievable. To give an example I have to include a SPOILER so consider this your warning. When Zoe is in the hospital from her accident she awakes to her husband and her therapist in the room. The therapist then proceeds to tell Zoe how she already informed Jason of EVERYTHING that had happened with Zoe and her affairs. Umm, I’m sorry but is a doctor supposed to do that?? What about the whole doctor-patient confidentiality thing?? I mean I felt like Zoe’s therapist was way underqualified to help her anyway and should’ve referred her to another doctor who specialized in Zoe’s type of addiction but that’s another issue entirely. Maybe she was supposed to be like that, who knows.

This was my first experience reading a book by Zane but definitely not my last. I can’t wait to see what else she has to offer. Oh and if you couldn’t tell I DEFINITELY recommend this one ;)

New Release! Tell Me You Love Me by Julie Prestsater

Tell Me You Love Me
by Julie Prestsater

Stay. Stay with me. Stay here. Stay close. Stay like this forever. Stay as happy as I am right here in your arms, always.

* * *

All I’ve ever wanted was to be loved, but if this is what true love is…I’m not so sure I want it anymore. It also makes me wonder if any of my memories of our once happy marriage are even real. Maybe I just conjured up the fairy tale in my head because I wanted…no…needed it so much. Who the hell knows?

“Molly just called to remind you about your book club meeting this afternoon.” He turns away. “I told her you’ve never missed a meeting and I doubt today would be any different.”

The door shuts behind him before I let a smile creep across my lips. Instantly, the hurt from this morning flees my mind and I feel nothing but giddiness. I have a book club meeting today, and let’s just say it’s not your everyday book club.

Sure, my husband may never truly love me again…but who needs love when you’re about to get an eyeful of hot firemen?

* * *

Tell Me You Love Me is the first in a four-book series called Fire Me Up—a sweet romantic comedy series about a group of sassy neighborhood women who have a serious love for steamy romance novels and sexy firemen. Lucky for them the local firehouse is just a few steps away and is in no shortage of hot firefighters to fill their wild imaginations.

“Nice to meet you, Lizzy.” I know the other guys called her Liz, but with her sweet face, smile, and that sassy mouth Liz doesn’t do her justice. Yeah, that mouth has me thinking all sorts of other things about her. I take her soft hand in mine and hold onto it a little bit longer than I should.

“Hey, Ryan. Welcome to the club.” Her eyes linger on mine for a few seconds. She’s the first to look away and I’m happy for it because I don’t know that I could have. I sure didn’t want to let go of her hand. I haven’t felt the stare of a woman in a long time, but I know when one is checking me out, and she definitely was. Not only that, but she likes that I’m looking at her too. I can tell. I can sense it with her uneven breaths and the flush of her cheeks. That sort of thing does a lot for a man’s ego and I welcome it.

She’s had me on edge since we first reached the midway point to the top of the hill. I observed each of the women as soon as we walked up and she’s the one who completely held my attention. Her long deep auburn hair, pulled high in a loose ponytail. Her green eyes bright and playful. The other women looked too made up and appeared to have spent time at the salon before coming out today. But not Lizzy, she’s so relaxed like she’s ready to head out for a day at the ball field.

I like that about her.

And I also liked her talking about my cock, if we’re being honest. Fuck if that doesn’t have me thinking about her mouth again.

Most women would prefer to use a different word, but cock slides off her tongue like a pro. I glance at her pink lips and instantly my pants tighten, wondering if she can handle more than just the word.
I grasp the cold water in my hand hoping it will act like a iced cold shower for my overactive hormones. It’s been longer than I can remember since a woman has had this effect on me.

“Okay, enough dick talk.” Austin tosses a few strawberries into his mouth. “Drink up, fellas. We gotta hump it.”

“I thought we were done with the dick talk,” the older one says. I think her name is Molly. “Men, I tell you. It always comes back to your peckers.”

I shake my head at that one as the rest of the group chuckles. Ain’t that the truth. For most men, it’s been about our junk since the first time we jacked off. Shit, maybe longer. My mom says she’d always catch me sleeping with my hand in my pants from the moment I graduated to big boy pajamas. Her choice of words, not mine. She still loves to tease me about it.

We toss our bottles into the recycling bin and pull our Air Packs onto our backs before heading out.
“Bye bye, boys,” Lizzy says. I turn back to steal a look at her again. The other women are chatting with each other, but not her. She’s looking at me too.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have been anxiously awaiting Gin’s story ever since she was first introduced. The fact that she doesn’t embrace her gifts, or curse as she sees it, makes her that much more intriguing. Especially since her sisters, Nicole and Brooke, have whole heartedly thrown themselves into mastering their powers and using them to fight “evil”. I just knew she had to have a juicy story or reason behind her decision, and I was not disappointed! Of course I’m not going to spoil that for you, you’ll just have to read and find out all the details for yourselves ;)

So clearly this isn’t just a story about Gin coming to terms with her abilities, there has to be a bit of romance thrown in there too… and it’s a good one! Enter Mathias Hunter. I loved the steady progression of Gin and Mathias’ relationship. I’m not a fan of insta-love so I really appreciate all the details of dates and stolen glances and growing emotions, which is exactly what happened here. Mathias, or Hunter as he’s known in the supernatural world, is probably my favorite male in the series. Everything about him is just so appealing. He can dance, says all the right things and acts on impulse as far as Gin is concerned. I absolutely adore them together; their personalities complement each other so well.

Even though each of the sisters has their own books (Wicked Winds and Wicked Waves) we haven’t heard the last of them. They each play an integral part in each other’s stories so it’s only natural and fitting that they continue to be present in each book as the story grows and their powers strengthen. I personally can’t wait to see how it all plays out as the mystery of the 4th sister comes to light .

Each book in this series just gets better and better than the last. Ms. Kay does an amazing job with the story building and creates such elaborate worlds and detailed backgrounds for each of the characters and places mentioned in her books. The story flows perfectly and the writing is flawless, something I’ve come to expect from this author. I would without a doubt, highly recommend the Solsti Prophecy Series!
