Review - Bound Series (Books 1-2) by Stormy Smith

BOUND BY DUTY

Amelia grew up in a world of half-truths. She knows she's an Elder, but has no idea what that means. Her father reminds her daily that she must maintain control, but he refuses to explain why. Even worse, she's betrothed to the prince of the Immortals and doesn't even know his name.

Finally breaking free to live a few normal years at a community college, the last thing Amelia expects is to find her best friend in a cheeky southern girl, or fall for a self-assured human who sees her for who she is, not what she will become.

As she learns more about herself, Amelia realizes the line between love and duty is a thin one. As her power continues to increase exponentially and her questions are slowly answered, Amelia must make the ultimate choice. The question is, will her head win the battle, or her heart?

Bound by Duty (Bound, #1)Bound by Duty by Stormy Smith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This author was brought to my attention by a follower of my blog and she had nothing but glowing things to say about this series. So when Stormy contacted me about reviewing her books I was ecstatic, especially because PNR is my absolute favorite genre. And when there’s magic involved?? I’m so there!!

When I come across a PNR novel I’m always curious to see what kind of world the author creates and how it differs from others in the genre. The creativity alone never ceases to amaze me. Stormy has done a fantastic job of delivering a uniquely crafted, magical gem! Everything about this story had me all giddy. The different types of magical powers and their coordinating colors was an interesting touch, along with the variety of supernatural beings and their individual backgrounds. I was just like a kid in a candy store with this story, could not get enough.

Secrets, secrets, and more secrets! Everybody’s got them, but what will it cost to uncover them?? Amelia has to overcome a lot of personal obstacles while trying to figure out what is fact and what is fiction. She’s been giving quite a few different “truths” but she’ll have to get to the bottom of it all to really understand who/what she is, what she’s capable of, and why the safety of her peoples rests solely on her shoulders. Throw in a love interest, an arranged marriage to a prince, a human (mortal) best friend, a queen intent on controlling everything & everyone (resulting in the fight of a lifetime), and you’ve got one gripping story line!

Needless to say, I really enjoyed this book from start to finish, and would definitely recommend it!

BOUND BY SPELLS

Aidan Montgomery hadn’t been prepared for Amelia Bradbury to walk in and then out of his life. He also hadn’t expected to find the powerful magic hidden deep within him for the last nineteen years, but he’s embracing it — finding more control and more answers every day. Now, with the help of Amelia’s best friend, Bethany, Aidan is on a quest to understand his destiny and find Amelia.

Amelia decided to stand by her duty, which meant walking away from her first chance at love. Trapped in Cresthaven at the Queen’s mercy, she spends her days with Micah — an ally she still holds at arm’s length — struggling to manage her heartbreak while keeping her mind focused on the task at hand. As she continues to unlock the secrets of the Keeper power, Queen Julia’s true motives reveal themselves, forcing Amelia to decide, yet again, how much she’s willing to sacrifice.

Will Aidan get to Amelia before it's too late, or will the very power that sustains them keep them apart?

Bound by Spells (Bound, #2)Bound by Spells by Stormy Smith
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An excellent follow up to Bound by Duty! This second installment picks up right where the first left off. I was fortunate enough to have this next book handy, otherwise the cliffy from book 1 may have been a lot more painful. I always appreciate when the sequel just gets right to the point, no dawdling or lengthy recaps, just a head-first dive into the heart of the story. So major kudos to Stormy for that!

I absolutely LOVED the dual POV! Hearing Aiden’s thoughts and following his story line as he struggled to find himself and learn more about his past made the original story line that much more intriguing. Not to mention that fact that he’s on a mission to rescue Amelia *Swoon!* with the help of some new friends. I was super curious as to how he came about his hidden powers since they just kind of came out of nowhere, and I was even a bit anxious, hoping it wouldn’t be some far-fetched scenario, but it was definitely well played, in true Stormy fashion.

I would actually like to hear from Micah’s POV too. He’s had an interesting (and somewhat traumatic) past as well. Being a royal and having the Queen as his mother hasn’t been easy for him, and I’m just dying to get inside his head and explore his feelings! Perhaps a little short story dedicated to him is in order ;)

I honestly just love everything about this magical world the author has created. She’s given us such a unique and diverse cast of characters, yet their personalities all work together and make this journey even more interesting. The story plays out much like a movie would, seamlessly and with great attention to detail. I thought Bound by Duty was amazing, but Bound by Spells absolutely blew me away!

Oh and I guess I should probably mention Amelia too since technically this whole series exists because of her. She’s amazing, end of story. But seriously, she’s pretty awesome; totally selfless, brave, insanely powerful, and headstrong. I just know she’s going to work some incredible magic and set things back to the way they were before the Queen got all screwy. I’m rooting for her 110% and I’m convinced she’ll deliver!

I can’t wait to get my hands on the third book, Bound by Prophecy!
