Release Promo - RUSH by Emma Scott

RUSH (City Lights: New York City Book 3)
by Emma Scott

To be blind is not miserable; not to be able to bear blindness, that is miserable. --John Milton

Charlotte Conroy, Juilliard-trained violinist, was on the cusp of greatness when tragedy swooped down on dark wings, crushing her hopes and breaking her heart. The music that used to sing in her soul has grown quiet, and she feels on the verge of setting down her violin for good. To pay the bills, she accepts a job as a personal assistant to a bitter, angry young man who’s been disabled by a horrific accident…

Noah Lake was an extreme sport athlete, journalist and photographer. He roamed the world in search of his next adrenaline high, until a cliff-dive left him in a coma. He awakes to find his career gone, his dreams shattered to pieces, his world an endless blackness that will never lift.

Charlotte begins to see that beneath Noah’s angry, brittle exterior is a young man in a pain. She is determined to show him that his life isn’t over, that he has so much to live for, never dreaming that she would become the only light in his darkness, or that he would help her find the music in hers.

The life he knew is over. The life she wants is just out of reach.
Together, they must face their fears and rediscover what it means to really live.

RUSH is Book III in the City Lights Series, and each can be read as a standalone.

He turned to me then, and the brusque demeanor slipped even as he tried to hold on to it. His brows furrowed as if were willing his eyes to work. To see me.

“Charlotte…what do you look like?”

I brought my head up sharply. “I told you what I look like.”

“You told me with words and words aren’t always enough.”

Does he want to touch my face? I felt my pulse quicken and I glanced at his hands in his lap. Nice hands. Masculine. Long fingers. “Well, I guess I wouldn’t mind. If you think it would help…or something.” I coughed.

Noah shook his head. “Never mind. Forget I brought it up. It’s stupid. I can’t see shit with my hands.”

“Have you ever tried?”

“No. That’s just a dumb cliché in even dumber movies.”

“How do you know?”

“I know because nothing will ever compare to just being able to see. Ever.”

“It seems to me that if the rest of your senses are heightened, your touch might be too.”

Noah shifted on the bench toward me. “Are you desperate for me to put my hands all over your face, Charlotte? Do you have a gnarly wart on the end of your nose that you’ve been dying to spring on me?”

I laughed nervously. “Now you’ve ruined the surprise.”

“Liar.”

“See for yourself,” I said, hoping my voice sounded as light as I tried to make it.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah,” I said. How the hell had I become so nervous? Or why? He was so close, I could practically count the gold flecks in his eyes.

Noah raised his hands, slowly, and I could tell he was nervous too.

“Go on,” I blurted. “Big hairy moles…and a unibrow that would’ve made Frida Kahlo jealous.”

He dropped his hands and rolled his eyes. “Will you shut up? I have to concentrate.”

“I wasn’t ready. Okay, I’m ready now.”

“Charlotte?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m sorry I told you to shut up.”

“Now you’re stalling.”

“Maybe. I’ve never done this before.” He raised his hands, lowered them again. “People are staring at us, right?”

“Yes. A crowd has gathered.”

“Ha ha.”

“It’s New York. No one’s watching.” I took his hand in my own that trembled slightly, and placed it on my cheek. “It’s okay. Go ahead.”

The street was loud and busy, but just then the very air between us seemed fragile, and I held my breath as Noah looked at me for the first time.

Excerpt

The van door behind us slides shut. A click signals Marianne’s adherence to my wishes, and then we three descend upon the front door, the crunch of dead leaves and twigs beneath our feet cutting through the uneasy silence the gloom sunrise has brought. In a surprising show of gentlemanly manners, the A.D. moves to open the door. When the handle does not depress, a half smile curves his lips. “It’s locked. But no worries. I can have it picked open in no time.”

“There is no need.”

Darkish-blonde brows scrunch together. “But—”

“Stand to the side, please.”

When he fails to move at my thinly veiled order, Mary not so gently yanks our companion away.

The door before us is thick. The handle is ornate. It is a beautiful door, no doubt chosen specifically to adorn a building as fine as Bücherei. It takes me three strong, measured swings of my war hammer against the handle and its surrounding area to break it apart and permanently scar its beauty. Picking a lock is kind, respectful even. A picked lock can be relocked. I do not wish this door to close behind me. I do not wish to be respectful of Bücherei.

The time for genteel manners is gone.

The A.D. is in danger of catching flies with his mouth as he ogles the door’s remnants. For someone who professes to be so clever, he certainly underestimates ladies far too often.

Stale darkness, oppressive and opaque all at once, looms before us. I am unafraid, though. I am not even taken aback. I believe in the impossible, after all. I have seen, lived the impossible.

I step past the wreckage into the house.

The Forgotten Mountain - Off With Their Heads

About THE FORGOTTEN MOUNTAIN:

After years spent in Wonderland, Alice Reeve learned the impossible was quite possible after all. She thought she left such fantastical realities behind when she finally returned to England.

Now Alice has become a member of the clandestine Collectors’ Society, and the impossible has found her again in the form of an elusive villain set on erasing entire worlds. As she and the rest of the Society race to bring this mysterious murderer to justice, the fight becomes painfully personal.

Lives are being lost. Loved ones are shattered or irrevocably altered. Each step closer Alice gets to the shadowy man she hunts, the more secrets she unravels, only to reveal chilling truths. If she wants to win this war and save millions of lives, Alice must once more embrace the impossible and make the unimaginable, imaginable. Sometimes, the rabbit hole leads to terrifying places.

The Forgotten Mountain (The Collectors' Society, #3)The Forgotten Mountain by Heather Lyons
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is why I love reading!!! This. Series. Right. Here.

I continue to be amazed by Heather Lyons’ imagination. Each new revelation blows my mind and leaves me in complete awe of this author. There’s so much detail, and so many twists and turns. These books are without a doubt highly addictive page turners!! Ms. Lyons has created such an elaborate fictional world using a cast of classic fictional favorites. I love when new characters are introduced, it’s like being on one of those celebrity spotting tours in Hollywood! The excitement is the same, I can assure you.

I don’t want to say too much and give away the story line, but I will say the fight again the Pied Piper and his associates is still on, and Instead of just navigating the timelines of the classics, we now have fairy tale timelines as well! Can it get any better than that?! Oh I’m sure it could. Each time I think Ms. Lyons has exceeded my expectations she always manages to kick it up a notch. Each installment in this series is without a doubt better than the last.

We get a closer look at the A.D. this time around and surprisingly enough he’s really not that bad! Sure he’s a womanizer from time to time, but he has quite a few redeeming qualities. He would do anything for the society and his friends, including putting himself into dangerous situations. He’s strong and extremely competent in battle making him a desirable partner, and his love of adventure puts him right in the middle of every mission. I can easily see him and Alice becoming the best of friends. They really made a connection, not a romantic one, and their respect and admiration for each other grew noticeably. It made me feel all warm and tingly inside! And I may have a teeny tiny crush on the A.D. now.

Alice has always been pretty badass in my opinion, but this new scorned, take-no-prisoners Alice is freakin awesome! From the very beginning she’s in recon mode, determined to make everyone who played a hand in the attack on the society headquarters pay big time. A person who feels like they’ve got nothing left to lose makes for a very dangerous adversary, as Alice proves time and time again throughout the story. There’s no doubt in my mind that she will prevail and come out on top. The story of Alice in Wonderland was always my favorite, so being able to see her brought to life in another story makes me love the original book even more.

I took my time reading this one because I just didn’t want it to end! The Forgotten Mountain is definitely the most action packed and intriguing book in the series so far. I can’t wait to find out what happens next! I must admit that I typically only read series that are complete, meaning all of the books are out and available, and the story itself has ended. My patience is severely lacking so I need the next book STAT, but when it comes to The Collectors’ Society I will take these books any which way I can get them! So if that means waiting months in between each release then so be it. You can’t rush perfection, and that’s exactly what this is.

Don’t miss the first two books in this series…

“You’re human,” he replied. “We have this inane desire to belong to something that is greater than we are on our own. That desire is so strong that we can fool ourselves into believing things that aren’t true.”

“So, I’m not crazy?” I cracked a smile.

“Definitely not crazy.”

His smile was comforting and I reminded myself for the hundredth time that everything would be okay.

I rested my head on his shoulder and a moment later his head rested on top of mine.

Excerpt:

Jumping over the edge of the bridge, Nivian landed with a soft tap on the surface of the water. She reached down, pulled the soul of the driver up by the collar of his shirt, and stood him up next to her on top of the water. She took the driver’s hand, palm up, in hers and waved her other hand over his. Pinching the air, she pulled, lifting up and exposing his life thread, his wide eyes were hypnotized by the glowing string of light. Grabbing the scythe strapped to her back she swung. With a slow, deliberate movement Nivian sliced the human’s life thread. The light formed a ball and hovered as she pulled out a small pocket watch. The life energy floated down to the watch and sunk into it, disappearing. With a snap, she closed the watch and returned it to her pocket.

“You really shouldn’t drink and drive; you could have seriously hurt someone,” she said, giving him an apathetic look.

He gaped at her, mouth opening and closing like a fish.

“Yes, you really are dead,” she confirmed as she turned away.

“Are you … the devil?” he finally managed to sputter.

“No, of course not. I am just the natural order of things,” she said, looking over her shoulder at him “Wait here. Your spirit counselor will be here soon to guide you to your afterlife. I have other jobs tonight.” She turned, walking away as she pulled her hood back up over her head and vanished.

About the Author

Melissa Collins has always been a book worm. Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book. She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher. Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students. Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it’s been a dream.

Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently. When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it. It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.

Review - CHASING THE DREAM SERIES by Elizabeth Briggs

More Than Exes (Book 0.5)

He wants to win. She wants to win him back.
Keyboardist Kyle Cross may look like a bad boy with his tattoos and piercings, but he's really the good guy who's always stuck fixing his band's problems and never gets the girl. His band is competing in a college Battle of the Bands, but when their bassist doesn't show, Kyle must track her down with the help of the person he least expects: his ex-girlfriend Alexis Monroe.

Kyle hasn't seen Alexis since she dumped him in high school, and she's dropped her preppy image for fiery red hair and a bold new attitude to match. With only hours before his band goes on stage, Kyle has to be a little bad if he wants to win both the Battle and the girl he's never gotten over. But when their old problems resurface, the good guy might just get his heart broken all over again.

A stand-alone novella that launches the Chasing The Dream series!

~ REVIEW ~

More Than Exes (Chasing The Dream, #0.5)More Than Exes by Elizabeth Briggs
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Great intro to the series! I really wish Kyle would’ve had his own full length novel. I wanted way more time with him than the novella allowed for! But I’m happy just to have gotten this brief look into his past. I was instantly intrigued by his good guy persona with bad boy looks, and totally sided with him as far as the undeclared battle of the exes goes.

How could you not want to be with him?! I was convinced Alexis had to be crazy not to want him! But then the whole ugly truth regarding the breakup unfolds while they’re running around town together trying to locate the missing bassist of Villain Complex, so Kyle and his band can compete in the Battle of the Bands. Then you realize there’s more to the story than meets the eye and maybe there’s no need to pick a side ;)

In this awesomely fast paced novella you can expect equal parts of humor, romance, and angst (the good kind) with a totally unique New Adult feel.

I’m sold! Onto the next book in the series!

More Than Music (Book 1)

A band trying to win it big on reality TV. A secret romance that might ruin it all.
Music major Maddie Taylor just finished her junior year of college and has a summer internship lined up with the LA Philharmonic, yet every night she practices guitar and secretly dreams of a louder life. But geeky girls like her don't get to be rock stars. That is, until tattooed singer Jared Cross catches her playing guitar and invites her to join his band on The Sound, a reality TV show competition.

Once on the show, Maddie discovers there's more to Jared than his flirty smile and bad boy reputation - and that he's just as big a geek as she is. With each performance their attraction becomes impossible to ignore, but when the show pressures them to stay single, they're forced to keep their relationship secret.

As the competition heats up, Jared will do whatever it takes for his band to win, and Maddie must decide if following her dream is worth losing her heart.

~ REVIEW ~

More Than Music (Chasing The Dream, #1)More Than Music by Elizabeth Briggs
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book reminded me why I love reading so much. Ms. Briggs has brought back a style of writing and story telling that has almost turned into a lost art. It’s not overly angsty or sexual, the writing sells itself without the need of flashy gimmicks and over the top antics. This first full length novel in the Chasing the Dream series contains, dare I say it, good old fashioned writing that has become quit hard to find as of late. The morning after I finished reading More Than Music I actually woke up still thinking about it. Believe it or not I thought it was a show/movie I had watched and not a book I had just finished reading the night before. I was looking forward to catching the next episode! So needless to say, I couldn’t wait to get to the next book.

I loved that More Than Music picked up right where the novella left off. After winning the Battle of the Bands competition, Villain Complex is about to embark on a new journey competing in a reality show competition called The Sound, a show similar to The Voice. Reality TV is my weakness, my kryptonite if you will, so the fact that this book was based around this show totally made my day. The band’s only problem at the moment is trying to find a replacement for their bassist, since bad boy guitarist and lead singer, Jared decided to take a dip in those forbidden waters, and of course there was bad blood between them afterwards.

Enter Maddie Taylor, the shy, geeky heroine who happens to be a closet guitarist and the answer to Villain Complex’s prayers. Nobody would have ever assumed that the same Maddie who was about to start an internship with the LA Philharmonic could be as talented, and just plain awesome as she is on the guitar. It’s always been her way of relaxing, so naturally over the years she continued to improve and eventually morphed into the musical beast that she is today!

Both Jared and Maddie have been given strict orders not to hook up or fall for each other in any way, shape, or form. The band comes first always, no if’s, and’s, or but’s about it. Risking everything they’ve worked so hard for because of a fling gone wrong is just not going to happen…again. But don’t you find that what’s forbidden is always a million times more tempting?? It just so happens that Maddie and Jared actually have a lot in common and hit if off almost immediately, so would it really be that bad just to get a teeny, tiny taste of that forbidden fruit?? You’ll just have to read and find out for yourself!

I instantly felt a connection to this unique case of characters. Their love and passion for music just exuded from their fictional pores, and I couldn’t help but be just as excited as they were about the whole process (from beginning to end) of competing on this show. The drama, romance, and overall flawless writing provide a fun, fast paced and exciting thrill ride. This is a stellar addition to the New Adult genre that I would HIGHLY recommend for those in need of a breath of fresh air!

More Than Comics (Book 2)

They're friends online - but can they be more in real life?
Writer Tara McFadden has been friends with artist and drummer Hector Fernandez for years, long before his band became famous on reality TV – yet they’ve never met in person. They finally have a chance to connect offline when they’re both sent to Comic-Con to promote the graphic novel they collaborated on.

More Than Comics (Chasing The Dream, #2)More Than Comics by Elizabeth Briggs
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh my goodness. Where to start?! I have been super curious about Hector’s story since I started this series. He’s always been the strong silent type and never really offered much in terms of conversation about himself or what’s going on in his life. Basically he’s a mystery. A mysterious HOT drummer. And he’s an artist. Let the swooning commence!

The general feel of this book differs from the ones before it. It takes on a slightly darker feel in the sense that there’s more drama, angst and sex. None of which I am complaining about. Paired with Ms. Briggs flawless writing and story telling it all works together perfectly. So A+ from me!

While this could potentially be read as a standalone I wouldn’t recommend it. You would be doing yourself a HUGE disservice to skip the first two books. So with that being said, if you haven’t’ read the prequel and book one but want to…stop reading this review…now. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

More Than Comics picks up right where More Than Music left off. Unfortunately, Villain Complex did not win The Sound due to some shady backstage business conducted by the show’s producers. They were clearly a crowd favorite though, and gained a much larger following from it, so it wasn’t all for nothing. Plus they’re about to go on tour with the other contestants and do what they love most…perform!

Before they can take off there’s one little matter to attend to…COMIC CON! I’ve never been but I’ve always been interested in what went on at one of these gatherings so getting to live vicariously through the characters was just awesome. Hector and his long time internet buddy Tara will be attending to host a panel on a project they’ve been working on together. Tara does the writing, and Hector does all the artwork. It works out perfectly! What neither expected was the instant attraction and connection they would feel when they finally met face to face. Their online friendship has grown so strong, but can they move out of the friend zone together and be more?? Read and find out!

One thing I’ve come to really love and appreciate in this series is the diversity. The characters are unique and refreshing, they feel like real people and for me that’s an important factor when you’re trying to connect with them and become a part of the story. As I’ve mentioned in my other reviews for this series, Ms. Briggs writing is a breath of fresh air. She incorporates everything you could possibly want in a New Adult novel into her work and doesn’t rely on sex or over the top antics as filler. You can always expect good QUALITY writing from her, and for that I HIGHLY recommend all the books in this series!
